Whidbey Island Maritime Heritage Foundation Maritime Heritage and Sail Tours on Whidbey Island |
|
There are many opportunities to support the Foundation (WIMHF) if you can volunteer your time. While our primary need is for crew and hosts, a significant amount of work occurs behind the scenes to ensure our historic schooner Suva can continue to sail and educate the public.
JOIN THE CREW
New crew members are invited to join annually between January 1 and April 10. We welcome volunteers with a passion for maritime history and a desire to take Suva to sea. We offer free training for all experience levels—from novices to blue water sailors—starting in early spring to prepare for passenger sailing in late spring.
BECOME AN AMBASSADOR
Hosts serve as our indispensable ambassadors to the public, providing onboard tours while Suva is docked in Coupeville. These free dockside tours are often the first step in a visitor becoming a passenger. Training is simple: an experienced host will guide you until you are comfortable signing up for your own shifts. During the summer, we need hosts for easy and fun two-hour shifts from Thursdays through Sundays. If you enjoy meeting people and sharing local maritime history or marine biology, this is the perfect role for you. Interested volunteers please email membership.schooner.suva@gmail.com
SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION
Beyond the boat, there are vital opportunities to assist in administering the WIMHF. Our mission is to preserve the maritime heritage and traditions of Whidbey Island, Coupeville, and Penn Cove through education and public awareness. Various committees oversee this mission:If you are interested in participating in these activities or have professional skills that can help our mission, please email schedule@schoonersuva.org. We will add you to our distribution list for meeting notices and upcoming sign-up opportunities.
